What the experts said
Brongard et al. published a study in the August 2019 issue of JPS examining recurrence rates of benign ovarian tumors in children.
The study was a retrospective review of 12 pediatric centers in the UK.
Among mature teratomas, immature teratomas, and serous cystadenomas, the recurrence rate was 8%.
Brongard et al. conclude that patients with benign ovarian tumors need robust follow-up.
Brongard et al. recommend every six month ultrasounds for surveillance of benign ovarian tumors in children.
