What the experts said
This is a retrospective study conducted at Boston Children's Hospital from 2008 to 2021
The study objective was to identify risk factors to create a score in patients who had ingested a button battery
The study included 143 patients
24 patients had serious injuries from button battery ingestion
Three risk factors predict serious injuries in button battery ingestion patients
The first risk factor is the location of the button battery in the esophagus at the time of consultation
The second risk factor is a button battery greater than 2 cm in diameter
The third risk factor is the presence of symptoms at onset
