What the experts said
This is a multicenter non-inferiority study comparing extremely premature patients with persistent ductus arteriosus who received expectant management versus ibuprofen treatment.
The study enrolled 273 patients: 136 with expectant management and 137 with ibuprofen treatment.
Patients receiving expectant management had 17.6% necrotizing enterocolitis, 33.3% bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and 14% mortality.
Patients receiving ibuprofen treatment had 15.4% necrotizing enterocolitis, 50.9% bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and 18.6% mortality.
Expectant management appears to be non-inferior to ibuprofen treatment in extremely premature patients with persistent ductus arteriosus.
