What the experts said
The study was a retrospective cohort analysis examining the impact of ostomy in patients undergoing ileal pouch-anal anastomosis
The study included 317 patients total: 238 in the ostomy group and 79 in the no-ostomy group
There were no significant differences in surgical site infection rates between patients who received ostomy versus those who did not during IPAA
There were no significant differences in postoperative abdominal drain rates between the ostomy and no-ostomy groups
There were no significant differences in 30-day readmission rates between patients with and without ostomy during IPAA
Ostomy may not always be necessary when performing ileal pouch-anal anastomosis
